Free Training and Assessment for Level 2 and 3 Qualifications through Train to Gain
What is Train to Gain?
The Train to Gain programme provides free training to help your employees gain their first full Level 2 qualification and Skills for Life first numeracy and literacy qualification. In some cases Train to Gain funding can be used to provide training for an NVQ level 3 qualifications.
Albion Environmental Limited is working closely with the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) and Train to Gain to offer Skills for Life and NVQ level 2 programmes to employers. Train to Gain is a Government-funded service designed to help businesses of all sizes across all sectors get the training they need to succeed. You can get more information at the following web addresses: www.traintogain.gov.uk www.wamitab.org.uk
Why is Train to Gain important for your businesses?
- Skills gaps are holding back growth: over 30% of UK firms which have tried to move their business strategies forward have been constrained by gaps in workforce skills
- Too many workers have low skills: nearly 30% of the UK workforce does not have a level 2 qualification (equivalent to 5 good GCSEs) compared with less than 20% in France and 15% in the US - this is particularly relevant if you want to compete internationally
- Jobs are becoming more complex: the proportion of jobs requiring no qualifications had fallen from 38% in 1986 to 27% in 2001
- New technology is changing the workplace: the number of jobs involving computing has risen from 50% in 1992 to over 75% today.
Skills shortages are one of the greatest challenges facing business in the UK. Although many companies recognise the value of investing in skills, some find it difficult to identify exactly what skills development they need, and they may not know where to go to find that training.
If your business is to be successful you need to compete, and to compete you need to train your employees. For businesses, getting the right skills advice is essential to choosing the best and most appropriate training. Train to Gain helps you to do this.
Research shows that across the country 1.3 million people go to work every day without the skills they require to do their job proficiently. Employers are increasingly investing in staff development and reaping the benefits that come with it, including improved staff confidence and motivation, higher retention rates and increased productivity.
How can training activity lead to improved business performance?
- Companies in the US investing between 3.5% and 4% of their total budgets on
- training out-performed companies with a below-average spend over a five year period
- UK companies with a high level of training are likely to grow at a faster rate and achieve above average profitability
- Increasing the proportion of employees trained by 5% is linked to a 4% increase in productivity in the UK
- 66% of employers involved in the Employer Training Pilot (forerunner to Train to Gain) in England felt it helped improve quality of service or production

How does the Scheme Work?
Introduction
Albion Environmental Limited are able to deliver a number of Level 2 and Level 3 Qualifications through our Train to Gain Contract with WAMITAB. What this means is that you, as an employer or an individual, can receive training at no cost to you.
The nature of the training to be delivered is detailed further in this guide. This guide has been prepared to enlighten you of the process and rules in terms of training provision, eligibility and funding. We hope that this guide helps you to understand the requirements we have to meet and the information and assistance we require from you as the employer, so that the funding can be secured and continued.
Train to Gain Funding is provided by the government to open up learning opportunities to anyone in employment to enhance their ability to contribute positively to you as their employer. Whilst your staff are receiving the training at no cost to you, this does not mean that the training is free of cost! For example, when a candidate does not complete their qualification, we as the training provider face significant shortfalls in our funding and, more importantly takes away funding for other potential candidates.
